The history we left behind us had an enormous secrecy of facts. We need to know because if you buy something/a refrigerator/a air-cooler you need to check it without having the knowledge on it.
Besically it a writing on the address delivered at the East Pakistan Journalists Conference held in Rajshahi on 10th November, 1962.
Journalist of East Pakistan ! I don't know why they have chosen Rajshahi for their Conference, unless it was intended to be emphasised that North Bengal is entirely without a newspaper, and that, therefore the Government should industrialise Rajshahi. There is a system of medicine in which the treatment has no ostensible connection with the disease. For instance, when you have a headache in the left hemisphere, the pressing or massaging of a vein in the right leg cures it. It would appear that the existence of a newspaper in a particular locality is connected in some such way with the industrial capacity of the locality, and you have touched what ought to be a responsive chord, industrialization being the declared policy of Government. Another reason for choosing Rajshahi may be that since 1906, when the All-India Muslim Educational Conference was held in Rajshahi, no event of importance has occurred to remind the people that Rajshahi had been the centre of culture, first in the third century Before Christ, and again, in the ninth century, when Buddhism was the State religion. If their address is historically accurate, Buddhism was succeeded by Islam. It is glad to note that Islam came to Rajshahi also, and it came so early. If they will forgive its frankness, it is in some doubt, for Islam has one big quality about it which is made to hit them in the face. When it comes, it brings a peculiar kind of change. Some call it a change of heart; others a change of name only. Thus KANAHYYA LAL becomes KHALID LATIF and LAWRENCE GARDEN becomes Bagh-i-Jinnah. If Islam had really come to them early, Rajshahi would have been named Takht-i-Sulaiman or some such thing. In West Pakistan, it came 30 or 35 years ago, that is to say like a refresher course, and we have started building a mausoleum for it in what is to be known as Islamabad. It is true that the word Islam in Islamabad has not been used in the same subjective sense as Muzaffar in Muzaffarabad or Liaquat in Liaquatabad, or even Baker in Bakergunj, but Islam comes to us in an emotional flood and carries grammar, composition and many lesser gods of propriety, off their feet.
